SHIELDING EFFECTIVENESS TESTS AGAINST ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS

Emctest Technologies is an emc laboratory that performs several tests such as shielding effectiveness test on site, directly at the customer, in Italy and in Europe, or in its headquarter in Rimini - Italy.

The tests are performed for all sectors:

  • private
  • industrial
  • automotive
  • medical
  • nautical
  • scientifical
  • governmental
  • aviation
  • railway
  • military

The Shielding Effectiveness Test verifies the attenuation capacity of material's electromagnetic field.

"Shielding Effectiveness" is defined as the level difference in dB between the RF energy coupled with and without the shield in place, therefore, measuring the RF shielding effectiveness of the Device Under Test (DUT).

The electromagnetic shielding (EM) of a material has the purpose of protecting the assemblages composed of electrical and electronic components from external EM fields that could create interference, with the possibility of causing damages and faults of different kinds up to irreparably compromising their functioning.

The goal is to verify the shielding from the produced electromagnetic fields avoiding interference or malfunctions caused by external devices. The required shielding effectiveness level is not unique and is defined by the EM field level which inhibits the performance of each device. Furthermore, shielding against electromagnetic fields is often necessary to limit EM radiation based on different standards reported below.

Shielding effectiveness tests are more important every day and widely requested in recent years following the continuous development of technological progress, especially in the field of telephony, radio frequency repeaters, and the design of equipment with increasingly sophisticated electrical circuits, electricity production and its use, and transportation in general.

Initially these tests were applied only in certain military areas in order to evaluate the shielding of reserved environments, today the field of application has been extended and does not concern only security and information protection needs but also safeguard for the human health (electrosmog).

EMCTEST Technologies is a leading test laboratory in Italy and Europe for electromagnetic shielding effectiveness testing. Thanks to advanced instrumentation and extensive experience in the field, we perform measurements from 10 kHz to 110 GHz on materials and devices intended for industrial, telecommunications, medical, military, automotive, railway, marine, aerospace, scientific, governmental, and civil applications.

Typical Test Frequencies

  • Low frequency: 10 kHz, 100 kHz, 500 kHz, 1 MHz
  • Mid frequency: 10 MHz, 30 MHz, 100 MHz, 433 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz
  • High frequency (RF and microwave): 1 GHz, 1.5 GHz, 2.4 GHz (ISM band), 3 GHz, 5 GHz, 5.8 GHz, 6 GHz, 10 GHz
  • Very high frequency: 17 GHz, 18 GHz, 24 GHz (ISM – Industrial, Scientific, and Medical bands), 26.5 GHz, 30 GHz, 35 GHz, 40 GHz, 50 GHz, 60 GHz (wireless communication and radar applications)
  • Millimeter wave: 75 GHz, 77 GHz (automotive radar systems), 94 GHz, 100 GHz, 110 GHz

Our test laboratory is equipped to perform shielding effectiveness measurements up to 110 GHz.
