MIL-STD-188-125-2 - HEMP PROTECTION STANDARD FOR GROUND-BASED FACILITIES

The MIL-STD-188-125-2 standard addresses protection requirements against High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulses (HEMP) for ground-based facilities. One of the core metrics for determining the reliability and efficiency of such protection is "shielding effectiveness".

Shielding effectiveness, as referred to in this standard, measures how well a barrier (such as a metal enclosure, metallic textiles, or specially designed partitions) can attenuate or reduce the electromagnetic interference (EMI) from an external source, like a HEMP event.
It's essentially a measure of how effective a shield is in preventing unwanted electromagnetic fields from penetrating through it.

Within the MIL-STD-188-125-2 standard, specific requirements for shielding effectiveness are laid out, especially concerning points of entry (POEs) like piping or ventilation systems. These systems are often vulnerable points where electromagnetic energy can enter, hence the need for strict criteria on how they should be shielded. The standard dictates the minimum levels of attenuation (often measured in decibels, dB) that protective barriers must achieve to be considered compliant.

Discover how metallic textiles and other materials can be utilized for optimal shielding in the context of this standard. Essential reading for professionals in defense, infrastructure protection, and electromagnetic interference mitigation.

For instance, if a certain section of the standard requires an 80 dB attenuation at 1 GHz, it means that the shielding should reduce the incoming electromagnetic signal's strength by 80 dB at that specific frequency. Achieving such levels ensures that the critical infrastructure inside the protected facility remains functional and unaffected by the intense electromagnetic fields associated with a HEMP event.

So the MIL-STD-188-125-2 standard underscores the importance of shielding effectiveness in safeguarding ground-based facilities from HEMP threats. As the potential consequences of inadequate shielding can be devastating, adhering to the rigorous criteria set out in the standard is essential for defense and infrastructure protection.
